Cibola A Dane Maddock Adventure Dane Maddock Adventures Book 2 edition by David Wood Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

Another great adventure for Dane Maddock and his ever present sidekick, Bones Bonebrake! This one takes them, along with a beautiful archeologist, all over the southwest United States in search of scrolls that will help them find the seven sacred cities of Cibola. Needless to say, there are more twists and turns, adventures and villains than any book needs but David Wood seems to keep dreaming up ways to keep you, as the reader, totally involved in what is happening to his intrepid band of "good guys". Read this book with an open mind and remember it is a work of fiction with just enough actual facts and real locations to keep you completely involved and maybe even make you want to visit some of the sites he mentions!
The David Wood Dane Maddock Adventures books are simply enjoyable. They’re not too deep in plot or with intricate characters, but have fast paced action, impossible scenarios and improbable escapes. They move along very quickly and smoothly. Another reviewer called these “Clive Cussler lite” and that’s a very apt description. This one is no exception. The author does very credible historical research when developing these Adventures and it shows in the cohesiveness of the story. If you’re craving a few hours of enjoyable escapism, then read one of the Dane Maddock Adventures books.
The second in David Wood's Dane Maddock series; this time Dane and is cohorts take us in search of the fabled 7 cities of gold Cibola. What they find could change the world's understanding of major historical events and possibly destroy some of the religious concepts held by it. Although I appreciate the authors atempt at showing the characters unbelieving de'sa vu between the similarities of his last adventure; I just don't feel it needs it. It really did not feel like a natural thing, more forced. But the book itself was fantastic. Believe me, I read a lot of books, the reader usually does not put that much thought into the fact that these adventures keep happening to the main character. Just write the story like that is just the way it is and it is fine. The story is always why we read not so much why it is happening to the character. If you have not read Dourado first, by all means start there. Just give the book a little time; it takes a couple of pages to get to the meat of the story. You have to lay the ground work first affter all.
This is the second in the Dane Maddock series and was par with the first novel. Typical ex Special Forces dudes team up with the obligatory gorgeous archaeologist (are there any female archaeologists in these types of books who aren't gorgeous, single and always the right age???) to search for a lost city of gold. Naturally there is an evil consortium hot on their trail who will nearly always seem to win but lose right at the end.

Was it a fluffy read - yes
Was it predictable - yes
Was it full of cliques - yes

WAS IT A GOOD READ - YES!

If you are prepared to let your mind go along for the ride, this series is very enjoyable. You don't have to think too hard, the plots are kind of obvious, the goodies are good, the baddies are bad and even the good who turns out bad turns out to be good (if you get my drift. And there is enough real life references that had me turning to google to make some of the plot at least realistic, just proves the author did do his research and did it relatively well.

My minor concern covers both this novel and it's predecessor - our intrepid team of death defying adventurers survive all odds to final find the treasure and end up walking away with nothing, nadda, nil. Why can't they actually find something without having to destroy it in the process. Mr Wood is not alone in this, it seems to be a standard plot ploy by the majority of authors of this genre search for treasure, find treasure, location where treasure is get destroyed, heroes survive but have nothing to prove what they found. It is so irritating (grumble grumble).
Good book which I enjoyed for the most part, and would normally rate 4 stars, but I had to dock it another star because I felt the book really fell apart toward the end. If you like books by James Rollins, Steve Berry, and other similar authors you might enjoy this - but it's not nearly as good overall as books by Rollins or Berry. I actually purchased this about 3 years ago and got around to reading this last week . . . the premise of the story did not grab me at first. There are several good things about the book - some of the characters are pretty interesting, the story is exciting at times, once it gets going it is not boring by any means. But a few problems, also mentioned by other reviewers, include one element too many of common adventure story lines (i.e., biblical treasure hunt, following a trail of clues to find hidden passages, secret society, monsters); the plot seems to accelerate and suddenly end abruptly, to me, without a very good resolution; and the mistakes or abuses of protocol the archeology "heroes" commit along the way. Still, fairly enjoyable read if you just want to escape for a while and follow an adventure.
